The fourth house and the IC
The fourth house sits at the very bottom of the chart. Its cusp is the IC, the point directly beneath you at the moment of birth. Astrologers read it as the foundation: the house you live in, the family you came from, the parent who shaped your inner life, your roots, your private self when nobody is watching.
It also holds the past. Old photographs, childhood habits, the way your mother set the table, the town you left. When a planet passes through here, it stirs that layer of life, the one that is usually running in the background while you get on with work and everything else.
What Venus does in the fourth house
Venus is the planet of affection, pleasure, taste and value. It does not push. Where it travels, that part of life becomes easier, sweeter and more social, and people are more inclined to be kind to you there.
In the fourth house, that means home gets nicer. You notice the light in the kitchen. You buy a plant, a rug, a better lamp. You want people round for dinner rather than out at a bar. Family conversations that have been stiff for months suddenly go more smoothly, often because you are the one who softens first.
Money is Venus territory too, so household spending tends to rise a little: a new sofa, a coat of paint, a deposit on a flat you have had your eye on. The urge is to make the base of your life more comfortable and more beautiful.
How it usually plays out
For most people the weeks are unremarkable in the best sense. A typical version: you clear out a cupboard, rearrange the living room, cook more than usual and feel oddly content on a Sunday afternoon. A parent phones and the call is warm instead of tense. A flatmate who has been difficult turns out to be reasonable once you actually sit down together.
If you are looking for somewhere to live, viewings tend to go better and landlords or estate agents are more agreeable. Some people sign a lease or complete on a purchase during a Venus transit of the fourth house, though that usually means the slower planets set the process in motion months earlier. Venus just makes the final step pleasant.
If you live alone, the shift is often inward. You stop treating your flat as a place to sleep and start treating it as somewhere to enjoy. Old memories come up in a gentler light than usual. People sometimes reconnect with a relative they had drifted from, or finally frame the pictures that have sat in a drawer for years.
When Venus turns retrograde here
Roughly every eighteen months Venus slows, stops and moves backwards for about six weeks. If that happens while it is in your fourth house, the stay lengthens to around two months and the tone changes. Instead of simply enjoying home, you review it. Is this the right flat? Do I actually like this furniture? Why am I still angry about something that happened when I was twelve?
A retrograde Venus in the fourth house often brings a former partner, an old friend or an estranged relative back into view, sometimes literally at the door. It is a good period for repairing a relationship inside the family and a poor one for buying expensive furniture on impulse. Wait until Venus turns direct, then decide.
Who feels it most, and what it cannot do
If you have a natal planet in the fourth house, especially the Moon, Venus or the Sun, Venus passing over it will feel stronger and more personal, and you may notice a specific event, a visit, a gift, a reconciliation, around the exact day of the conjunction. The same goes if transiting Venus makes a close aspect to your natal Venus, Moon or Ascendant during those weeks.
Venus describes a climate, not a fixed event. A soft, agreeable few weeks at home will not undo a long-running family rift on its own, and it will not stop a difficult transit from Saturn or Pluto that happens to be running at the same time. Read it alongside the rest of the chart. On its own it is a mild, helpful influence, and most of the time that is exactly what it feels like.

To see how the fourth house responds to firmer pressure, compare Saturn, Mars or Jupiter transiting the 4th house. To see how Venus behaves elsewhere, follow it into the third house just before, where it favours conversation and short trips, or the fifth house just after, where it turns towards romance, children and play.
Areas of life
The strongest effect is here. You want your space to be comfortable and good to look at, and you are more likely to act on it: paint a wall, buy cushions, finally fix the broken shelf. Moving house or viewing flats tends to go smoothly, and the people you deal with are more helpful than usual.
Relations with parents and siblings soften. It is one of the better times of the year to visit your mother, host a family meal or raise something that has been sitting unsaid. You are not guaranteed agreement, but people are more willing to listen and less quick to take offence.
Romance turns domestic. Couples enjoy staying in, cooking together and talking about where they want to live. Someone new may be introduced to your family, or you may meet a partner through a relative or a neighbour. Single people often find they are simply not in the mood to go out much, and that is fine.
Spending shifts towards the house: furniture, decoration, a deposit, help for a parent. Money can also arrive from family, a gift or a loan from a relative, or the settling of an old household debt in your favour. Keep the receipts if Venus is retrograde.
Energy is calm and appetite for comfort is high, so rest comes easily and so does an extra helping. It is a good few weeks for sleep, home cooking and slowing down, less good for discipline. Nothing here is a health problem in itself; it is just a pull towards the sofa.
Friends come to you rather than the other way round. Expect invitations to host, and enjoy them. Old friends from your home town or from childhood may resurface, and a coffee with someone you have not seen for years can be unexpectedly easy.
What to do with it
- Do one small thing to make your home nicer in the first week, even just moving a chair to catch the light. It sets the tone for the rest of the transit.
- Invite family or old friends round for a meal instead of meeting out. Home is where the good conversations will happen.
- If there is a strained relationship with a parent or sibling, use these weeks to make the first gentle move. You do not have to solve everything; just open the door.
- If you are house-hunting, book viewings now. If you are signing, read the contract properly anyway; Venus makes people agreeable, not careful.
- If Venus is retrograde, hold off on large furniture purchases and big decorating decisions until it turns direct. Use the time to sort, clear and reconsider instead.
- Look through old photographs or letters. The past is close during these weeks and usually kinder than you remember.
