The Moon at the base of the chart
The fourth house begins at the IC, the lowest point of the chart. If the Midheaven is the public roof, the IC is the foundations: where you come from, who raised you, where you sleep, what you go back to when the day is over. It holds the parents, the childhood home, the current flat or house, and the feelings you keep out of sight.
The Moon is comfortable here. In traditional astrology the fourth is the house of Cancer, the sign the Moon rules, so a Moon passing through tends to settle in rather than fight the terrain. That comfort has a flip side. Feelings that were sitting quietly under the surface tend to rise, and you can find yourself more tender, more tired or more sentimental than you were two days earlier.
The Moon moves through all twelve houses every month, so wherever the Moon is in your chart, that area of life gets a wash of feeling and a few small events. In the fourth house the feeling is about belonging and the events are domestic.
What usually happens
Most of the time it is small things. You cancel plans and stay in. You cook something your mother used to make. A parent rings, or you think about ringing one. A pipe drips, a bulb goes, the landlord emails about the boiler inspection. You spend an evening moving furniture two feet to the left and feel oddly better for it.
There is often a pull towards sorting and clearing. People go through old photos, finally deal with the drawer that will not close, or look at property listings without quite meaning to. If you live with others, the atmosphere in the house becomes more noticeable: a flatmate's mood, a child's clinginess, a partner's silence. You are more porous to the people who share your walls.
None of this is dramatic. The Moon does not buy houses or end marriages in two days. It colours the days it touches, and then it moves on into the fifth house and you feel like going out again.
Moods and memory
The fourth house is also the house of the past, and the Moon rules memory. Expect the two to meet. A smell, a song or a particular light in the afternoon can bring back a room you have not stood in for twenty years. Old grievances with family may surface for no obvious reason, along with old affection. Dreams are often fuller and easier to remember.
Sleep and appetite tend to shift. Some people sleep longer and heavier; others wake at three in the morning with a head full of childhood. Comfort food is common, and so is the wish to be looked after rather than to look after anyone. If you are usually the one holding everything together, these are the days when that gets tiring.
When it feels stronger
For many people the fourth house Moon passes almost unnoticed, a slightly homebound couple of days each month. It is stronger if you have natal planets in the fourth house, because the Moon will pass over each of them in turn and briefly light them up. A natal Saturn there can make these days heavy or lonely; a natal Venus can make them cosy and affectionate; a natal Mars can bring a short flare of household temper.
It is also stronger when the transiting Moon forms a close aspect to something elsewhere in your chart while it is in the fourth, and much stronger if a New Moon or Full Moon falls there. A Full Moon in the fourth house can bring a family matter or a housing matter to a head for a week or so, which is a different scale from the ordinary monthly pass.
Because the Moon returns to the fourth house every month, you can learn your own pattern. Note the dates for three or four months. Many people find they have a recurring couple of days when they want to hide, and it lines up.
Reading it alongside the rest of the chart
A transit describes a climate, not a fixed event, and the Moon's climate is the shortest-lived of all. If something large is happening at home, the Moon is not the cause. Look for a slower planet: Saturn or Pluto in the fourth house brings the long, structural changes, Jupiter brings the expansions and the moves, Uranus brings the sudden ones. The Moon simply makes you feel those longer stories more keenly for two or three days each month.
If you want to place these days in context, it helps to read about the other planets moving through your fourth house, and about the Moon in your other houses, so you can see where it goes next and what it stirs there.
Areas of life
Home is the centre of gravity for these two or three days. You may want to stay in, tidy, cook, or fix something small that has been bothering you. Practical household matters have a way of surfacing: a bill for the flat, a repair, a conversation with a neighbour or landlord.
Parents and siblings come to mind more readily, and contact with them is more likely. Old family dynamics can replay in miniature, so a routine phone call may touch a nerve it would not touch next week. Be gentle with the tender spots and do not read too much into one evening's irritation.
You want closeness of the quiet sort: a night in, being held, being fed. Partners who live with you feel more present, for better or worse. If a relationship is going through a rough patch, the fourth house Moon can make the gap feel wider than it is, so wait a day or two before drawing conclusions.
Ambition dips. Working from home suits these days better than a big presentation. If you can, keep the diary light and do the kind of work that does not need you to perform. The pull towards the public world returns as the Moon moves on into the fifth house.
Energy runs lower and the body asks for rest, warmth and regular meals. Digestion and sleep are the usual places you notice it. It is a good moment to catch up on rest rather than push through fatigue.
Spending tilts towards the household: groceries, furnishings, a repair, something for a parent or child. Property decisions may cross your mind but the Moon is too quick to decide them well. Look, budget, and come back to the numbers next week.
What to do with it
- Keep one evening free of plans and spend it at home doing something slow, such as cooking properly or sorting a cupboard.
- Ring or visit a parent or older relative if the thought arrives; the Moon in the fourth house makes those conversations easier than usual.
- Postpone signing a lease, making an offer on a property or having a difficult family confrontation until the Moon has moved on, unless it genuinely cannot wait.
- Write down a memory or a dream that surfaces. The fourth house Moon brings up material that is useful later and hard to recall afterwards.
- Notice the dates each month and compare them. After three or four passes you will know whether these are your quiet days, your sad days or simply your laundry days.
- Go to bed earlier than usual. The body's rhythms are more sensitive here, and lost sleep shows.
