What Mercury does in the seventh house
Mercury is the planet of thinking, talking, writing and sorting things out. Wherever it is in the sky, that part of life fills up with messages, questions and small decisions. The seventh house sits opposite the Ascendant, on the Descendant, and it describes the other person: whoever stands across from you as an equal. That includes a spouse or long-term partner, a business partner, a client you deal with directly, a solicitor or agent acting for you, and also an open rival.
Put the two together and you get a spell where your mind is on other people and what they think. You notice how your partner phrases things. This is annoying but it is also useful. The first version of an agreement is rarely the best one. Retrograde Mercury gives you the chance to fix what was rushed. The sensible approach is to treat anything signed during the retrograde as provisional, to expect delays in replies, and to say clearly what you mean because it will be misheard anyway. Big commitments, such as a wedding date or a partnership contract, sit more comfortably after Mercury has turned direct and passed the point where it first stopped.
Who feels it most strongly
If you have a natal planet in the seventh house, Mercury will make an exact conjunction with it as it passes, and that day or two is when the theme is sharpest. Mercury over natal Venus tends to bring warm, easy talk; over natal Saturn, a serious sit-down about responsibilities; over natal Mars, a row that at least clears the air.
Anyone with Mercury ruling their seventh house, which means Gemini or Virgo on the Descendant, tends to notice the whole passage more. So does anyone whose natal Mercury is being aspected by the transit. Whatever else is happening in your chart at the time matters as much as the house position, and a slow planet like Saturn or Pluto crossing the same area will set the deeper mood that Mercury only comments on.
Areas of life
Couples talk more, and about practical things: money, family, the future. Misunderstandings surface and can be cleared, provided both people are willing to say what they mean. Singles find dating turns conversational, and quickly learn whether there is anything to say to each other. A partner may need more listening than usual.
Business partnerships, client relationships and anyone you negotiate with directly come into focus. Terms get discussed, proposals go back and forth, and agreements that were loose get tightened. It is a good fortnight for a difficult but overdue conversation with a co-founder or a key client.
Shared money becomes a topic: a joint account, who pays which bill, a split of profits. Contracts with a price attached, such as a lease or a freelance rate, come up for review. Read what you sign, and if Mercury is retrograde, expect one round of revisions.
