What Mercury does in the second house
Mercury is the planet of thinking, talking, reading, writing and small decisions. It is not a planet that brings money or takes it away. What it does is bring attention. When it crosses into the second house, money becomes a subject. You open the banking app more often. You notice the price of coffee. You finally read the letter from the pension provider that has sat on the counter for a month.
Because Mercury also governs conversation, the money talk tends to happen out loud. A partner asks about the joint account. A client wants to renegotiate a rate. Your landlord mentions the rent. In practice that means reviews and reworks. An invoice you sent is queried and has to be reissued. A direct debit fails and you have to sort it out. A pay negotiation stalls and reopens a month later on different terms. A purchase turns out to be the wrong size, the wrong model, or simply not needed, and goes back.
The useful side is that retrograde is good for checking. Old subscriptions get cancelled. A bank error from last year comes to light. You look at your spending honestly, perhaps for the first time in a while. Purchases and contracts made during the retrograde are more likely to be revisited, so if a decision can wait until Mercury moves forward again, let it.
Self-worth and the inner accountant
The second house is not only about cash. It is also about what you think you are worth and what you value in life. Mercury, being a mental planet, brings this into words. You may catch yourself comparing your salary with a colleague's, or wondering whether you undercharge, or noticing that you talk yourself down when someone asks what you do.
This can be uncomfortable, but it is information. A thought you can hear is a thought you can check. Everyone gets Mercury through the second house at least once a year, and for many people it passes almost unnoticed beyond a busy week of bills. It matters more if you have natal planets in the second house, because Mercury will pass over them and bring their themes into the conversation. Couples tend to talk about money during these weeks, whether they intend to or not. Who pays for what, whether to open a joint account, how much to spend on a holiday. Handled plainly, it clears the air. Avoided, it turns into small quarrels about the shopping.
Possessions come under review. People sell, sort, declutter and price up what they own. If you are buying something for the house, read the specifications twice, especially under retrograde, and keep the receipt.
Mercury here has little direct effect on the body, but money worry can disturb sleep. If you find yourself doing sums at three in the morning, write the numbers down before bed so the mind can put them away.
You may lend, borrow or split a bill with friends, and small sums get discussed. It is also a period when a friend's practical advice about money lands well. Keep any loans between friends written down, even informally.

- Set aside one evening early in the transit to read every statement, bill and letter about money you have been avoiding.

- If Mercury is retrograde in your second house, delay large purchases and new contracts until it moves forward, and use the time to cancel unused subscriptions instead.
- Have the money conversation with your partner, flatmate or business partner while the subject is already on your mind rather than letting it wait.
- Keep receipts and confirmation emails for anything you buy, as returns and corrections are more likely than usual.
